The Solar Eclipse special.
Stóri-Kambur & Hooves Around the World: Solar Eclipse Special. We are excited to announce that Stóri-Kambur and Hooves Around the World have teamed up for a special edition of our classic peninsula tour. Running from August 8th–13th, this unique itinerary combines our traditional multi-day riding trek across the spectacular landscapes of Western Iceland with an exclusive, quiet viewing of a truly once in a lifetime event: a total solar eclipse over the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
The Riding & The Eclipse
We ride in groups across some of the most varied terrain you’ll find anywhere in the world. The Snæfellsnes peninsula has often been called “Iceland in miniature” due to its ever-changing landscape, offering a taste of almost everything the rest of the country has to show. On this exclusive expedition, we will ride from the southwestern corner all the way to the northeastern coast of Snæfellsnes. By choosing this tour, you will witness an awe-inspiring glacier, ride on multiple beaches and through ancient lava fields, marvel at spectacularly tall ocean cliffs, cross waterfalls and rivers, and traverse fields of green and rugged mountain passes. We will pace our journey to match the changing terrain, riding both slow and fast. For the first four days of the trip, we travel along the southern coast of Snæfellsnes, spending a part of each day on the sand. These beaches form some of the world’s greatest riding terrain; their high clay content creates the perfect, firm ground for a smooth ride.
The Solar Eclipse Special
On the evening of August 12th, we will step away from the saddle for an exclusive, once-in-a-lifetime event. While the rest of the country contends with the frantic traffic of eclipse chasers, we will escape to a completely private beach. There, in absolute peace and quiet, we will witness the breathtaking majesty of the solar eclipse. As darkness falls, we’ll light a roaring bonfire, play music, and celebrate this cosmic phenomenon under the Icelandic sky. On the final day, we take our time to ride through the historic and beautiful area of Helgafellssveit, capping off an unforgettable journey.
Accommodation
The Holy Ram Hotel
Even though this tour is a journey across the peninsula, you won’t have to rough it. While the horses rest in their fields each evening, you will return back to the comfort of The Holy Ram Hotel. The Holy Ram features beautiful double and twin rooms, each equipped with its own private bathroom, great views, and a spectacular skylight directly over the bed. You’ll also find a cozy communal hall complete with a bar and a comfortable sitting area. After a long, thrilling day in the saddle, it’s the perfect place to come “home” to—grab a pint, relax with a book, or share stories on the sofa with your fellow riders while you smell dinner being cooked fresh in the kitchen. Just outside, you can unwind in our fantastic outdoor space, featuring a hot tub and a sauna with incredible views of the ocean, mountains, and glacier. Soak in the warm water under the midnight sun, listening to the powerful sound of the ocean battling the coast in the distance.
The Food
There is no doubt that on a ride like this, the food is just as important as the journey. On this tour, you will be served a quality breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day, filled with delicious and traditional Icelandic meals. Our menu is overwhelmingly locally sourced from our abundant community of small family-run farms and local fishermen. We serve lamb raised free-roaming on the peninsula, fish caught fresh by our neighbors and family, dairy and beef from a nearby dairy farm, and locally grown vegetables. We eat together as a family, sharing the same hearty, exciting menu each day. A delicious vegetarian option is happily provided for those who let us know in advance

Get to know our horses
We place great importance on our horses having a good temperament, and that they are diverse when it comes to their looks, abilities and character. After all, our guest’s experiences vary, and while some have never been on a horse before, others are advanced riders. We try our best to find a horse that suits the skill level of each and every rider individually. So, come now and get to know our horses in person while riding on one of the prettiest tracks in the country.
Important
Disinfection instructions from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority
Importing horses to Iceland is strictly forbidden. Due to the isolation of the country and the import ban, the Icelandic horse has been lucky enough to avoid most of the diseases horses in other countries can be inflicted with. Importation of used tackle, riding clothes or anything else which may be used around horses is also strictly forbidden unless it has been disinfected in accordance with law. See further on the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority’s website.
We care deeply about our horses and the Icelandic horse breed. Please help us maintain the health of the Icelandic horse and respect rules regarding the disinfection of tackle and riding clothes.
